Overview of Opinion Tester
Dial Focus Group Manager

Opinion Tester Dial Focus Group Manager is a
combination of

  • Opinion Tester Dial Test Handhelds
  • Opinion Tester Dial Test software

Opinion Tester Dial Testing Manager simplifies collecting second by second perception data from targeted groups of people.

Opinion Tester Dial Testing Handhelds

Opinion Tester Dial Testing Handhelds are handheld devices that can dial test the second by second opinions of each individual of a group. Opinion Testing dial testing also allows a group of participants to answer questions and register feedback by simply turning a dial.

Opinion Tester Dial Focus Groups has currently developed its third Opinion Tester Dial testing Handheld version, designated model 1300, which is wired with a single calibrated dial.

Model 1300 dial testing handhelds plug into hubs which then plug into our computer.  Up to 4 model 1300 handhelds can plug into a hub and up to 8 hubs can be connected to our computer for a total of 32 total handsets supported.  Currently Opinion Tester dial focus groups offers 24 seat testing.

Opinion Tester Dial Manager Software

Opinion Tester Dial Manager Software is the application used in conjunction with the Opinion Tester Dial testing Handhelds and provides the following capabilities: hardware configuration, test creation, data collection, reporting.

 Hardware Configuration

Opinion Tester Dial Testing Manager  Software allows the dial test manager to configure the handhelds and hubs connected to the computer.  It also allows the manager to calibrate and test each of the handhelds prior to the dial test to insure absolute accuracy of data collection.

Test Creation

The first step to collecting data with Opinion Tester Dial Testing Manager is to create a dial test.  A dial test consists of one or more steps which can be any of the following:

  •  A Multiple Choice Question.   This can be any question with anywhere from 2 to 11 answers.  The question and answers will be displayed on the screen for dial focus group participants who will answer by selecting the corresponding number on their dial testing handhelds.
  •  A Continuous Scale Question.  This is a question the response to which can be any number on a scale. Any scale with a maximum value up to 100 can be used, for example a question will be displayed on the screen for group participants who will answer by moving the dial on their handhelds to the appropriate place on the scale.
  • An Audio/Video Segment also known as PERCEPTION ANALIZATION of Media:.  This is an audio/video clip which will be played for the group.  Participants will respond to what they see and hear by moving the dial on their handhelds.  Their responses will be captured and recorded on a second-by-second basis.  This information is extremely important to deciphering disconnections and the connections an audience has at any given time.  In addition, the information captured is used to track the 'trends' of perception on a second by second basis.

A test can consist of any number of these steps in any order.  For example, you might start a test with several questions, then show an audio/video step, and then follow up with additional questions.

    IMPORTANT TEST FEATURES:

Two important features of tests to note:

    1. In the reporting phase, test question responses can be associated with audio/video segment responses.  For example, if one of the test questions concerns education level, the audio/video segment responses can then be broken down by education level.  This is true whether the questions occur before or after the audio/video segment.
    2. Each test run is referred to as a session.  A test can be run any number of times for any number of participants.  The multiple sessions can then be combined together for reporting purposes.  For example, you could run a test for 20 participants on Monday and then again for 10 participants on Wednesday and then again for 30 participants on Friday.  Provided you did not modify the test, all 3 sessions can be combined to generate a single set of reports.

Data Integrity Features

At Opinion Tester our team has over fifteen years of experience building systems that take into account data integrity.  At Opinion Tester we understand that it doesn’t matter how elegant a system is for collecting and reporting data, if the data is not valid, the system is useless.

To help insure data integrity, Opinion Tester has built a number of  other EXTRA features into Opinion Tester Dial Manager:

Warm-up Game

The first key to getting valid data out of a dial group is making sure that all the group members are familiar with their handheld devices.  Opinion Tester Dial Manager includes an optional game which does just that.  The game is activated by the test manager prior to the test and takes about 5 minutes.  By the end of it, all participants should be ready to use their handheld devices.  And, if for some reason a participant is unable to use the device, the game will identify this before the test.

Non-Responsive Alerts

Once a test is underway, it is important to make sure participants are answering questions and responding to audio/video steps.  That is why Opinion Tester Dial Manager includes non-responsive alerts to warn the test manager when participants are not responding.  For example, when a test manager goes to record the answers to a question, if one or more of the participants has not dialed in an answer, a warning box will pop up identifying the handheld units in question.

Expected Response Exclusion

Finally, when it comes time to generate reports, it is important to make sure participants responded truthfully and accurately.  That is why, during reporting, the Opinion Tester Dial Manager Expected Response Exclusion feature allows the test manager to exclude data from participants who answer incorrectly to questions to which the correct response is already known.  For example, the test manager can record the gender of each participant, and then exclude data from participants who answer a gender question incorrectly.

This feature also allows the exclusion of data from participants based on cross referencing responses to questions.  For example, if two similar questions are asked, it allows the exclusion of participants who answered one way to one question and another way to another question.  Up to three questions can be cross referenced to exclude participants.

                  Data Collection

Once a test has been created, it can be executed to collect data.  During data collection, the test manager uses the Opinion Tester Dial Manager main screen to manage the test.

The Opinion Tester Dial Manager main screen allows the test manager to move from step to step and to see not only what the participant is seeing but also participant responses as they are occurring.  For audio/video steps, a moving graph of average responses or individual responses is displayed.

3 MORE IMPORTANT DATA COLLECTION FEATURES offered by Opinion Tester

Three important EXTRA data collection features to note:
     1.  If there are observers (the client) , the Data Manager screen can also be configured so they can watch it as well.  This allows clients to observe responses from group participants as the test is occurring.
2.
Test steps can be modified and inserted while the test is going on, for example, to add questions suggested by observers during a session.

If the test manager attempts to record the answers to a multiple choice question and one or more participants have not answered, the software will warn the manager and tell him the handheld unit numbers for the non-responsive participants.  Similarly, if one or more handheld does not change during an audio/video segment, the manager will also be warned.  This allows the manager to be proactive in identifying either participant or hardware issues.

Reporting

Once data has been collected, Opinion Tester Dial Manager provides a wide variety of reporting options including:

Playback.  Playback allows the manager to play back responses to questions and audio/video segments as the occurred during the test.

Export.  Raw data can be exported in electronic format for input into other programs.  Supported formats include ASCII comma delimited, Excel, and Microsoft Access.

    • Text Reports. Text reports with tables of data can be generated suitable for importing into a  word.

    • Graphs.  Graphs can be generated in JPEG format suitable for importing into word processing programs such as Word and presentation program such processing program such as Word or printing. as PowerPoint or printing.

    • HTML Reports.  HTML format reports can be generated suitable for posting directly onto the web.  Opinion Tester can also provide a password-protected website for the reports, if desired.

Report data can be selected in a variety of ways including:

  • If questions were included in the test, the data can be selected based on the response to one or more questions.  For example, if the participants were asked their gender and level of education, a report can be generated of data from women with advanced degrees.

  • If questions were included in the test, data from participants who answered questions differently can be reported against each other.  For example, if the participants were asked their gender and age, data from male teenagers could be graphed against data from female teenagers.
  •  Opinion Tester Dial Manager supports the database industry-standard query language SQL (Structured Query Language).  This means that report queries are fully-customizable using SQL.
